It was the shot heard around the state for the grassroots tea party movement. Its arch-nemesis The Tea Party would not be allowed on the November ballot, after a decision by the Michigan Supreme Court. That set off a series of victorious comments by those who consider themselves part of the "real" tea party. The Michigan Supreme Court voted 5-2 not to hear The Tea Party's appeal of a Court of Appeals decision to bar them from the November ballot. Newly appointed Alton Thomas Davis voted to not hear the case. Supreme Court Justices Marilyn Kelly and Diane M. Hathaway...

I have argued here before that government "economic development" programs that pick winners and losers for selectively distributed "incentives" are in reality political development programs. A fine proof of this assertion was a PR stunt a few years back from Michigan House Republican leadership on a factory floor in Lansing. The event's press release headline read, "Republicans Vow: We Will Fight for Every Michigan Job"; the text described how their multi-point "economic stimulus plan" would create jobs. It consisted of a smorgasbord of new and existing discriminatory tax break and subsidy programs. Unfortunately for the caucus, then-Speaker Rick Johnson's office...

A state senator says Michigan's economic development agency's inflated claims of job creation is costing it credibility and leading her to lose confidence in the program. State Sen. Nancy Cassis, R-Novi, called out the Michigan Economic Development Corporation for its press release that boasted of new job creations that a state audit showed only occurred 28 percent of the time. At a recent senate hearing, Cassis told MEDC CEO Greg Main, "The press releases are an absolute disconnect with reality." Michael Shore, spokesman for the MEDC, didn't respond to an e-mail seeking comment. Cassis said the MEDC didn't seem too...

fortune tellers in Warren, Mich., must be fingerprinted and pay an annual fee of $150 — plus $10 for a police background check — to practice their craft. But officials in Warren, a town of 138,000 near Detroit, say it's time to weed out tricksters. "We had no mechanism of enforcement to protect people against unsavory characters," Regulating an industry that deems itself clairvoyant, has no standard education requirements and yet rakes in cash for revealing spiritual truths may itself be an act of faith. It also might make good economic sense: about 1 in 7 Americans consulted a psychic...

DETROIT, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson and Detroit Mayor Dave Bing experienced the city's lawlessness firsthand in recent days when they were targeted by car thieves. Jackson was in the city last weekend for a march to promote peace and justice. A Cadillac Escalade he was using in the city disappeared from a parking lot, WJBK-TV reported. The vehicle was found on a Detroit street stripped of most of its salable parts. Bing lost the tires from a GMC Yukon Denali assigned to him as a secondary vehicle, Detroit's WDIV-TV reported. The theft occurred overnight Tuesday while...

The Michigan Supreme Court has made the final decision eliminating the fraudulent "Tea Party" Party from the 2010 elections. Four of Michigan's Democrat appointed justices joined its small three Republican appointed contingent to declare the so-called "Tea Party" Party ineligible for the ballot. For months various Democrats and union members have been trying to create a new political party in Michigan misleadingly named the "Tea Party" Party. 23 candidates had been slated from this Democrat dirty trick effort in order to confuse voters into imagining that they are voting for candidates that actually support Tea Party movement ideals. The scandal...

Jesse Jackson's car stolen in Detroit September 4, 2010 The Rev. Jesse Jackson found out just how rough things are in Detroit. Several Detroit media outlets reported thieves stole Jackson’s ride — a 2009 Cadillac Escalade — from a parking lot near the city’s Doubletree Hotel. The SUV was later recovered, but it was found without its rims and one of its windows had been broken, according to Detroit’s WXYZ-TV. Jackson was in Detroit for a march and rally called “Rebuild America: Jobs, Justice and Peace.” Just days after Jackson’s SUV was stolen, one of Detroit Mayor Dave Bing’s vehicles...

The Rev. Jesse Jackson came to Detroit last weekend pushing green jobs for the U.S. economy. On Monday, the Cadillac Escalade carrying him around the city was stolen and stripped. Does building replacement $1000 rims count as "green jobs?" Jackson came to Detroit as part of UAW President Bob King's "Jobs, Justice and Peace" march on Sunday, which drew about 5,000 people to a combination protest and Democratic Party spirit parade. A day after the rally, the 2009 Cadillac Escalade SUV that Jackson used to get around Detroit went missing from a parking lot near his hotel. According to WXYZ-TV,...
